Frequently Asked Questions
During Labor & Birth
Can a doula check your cervix?
No!
Cervical exams are considered a clinical procedure.
Only medical professionals such as doctors or midwives should perform vaginal exams to assess dilation or effacement.
Doulas are not trained or licensed to perform any type of invasive procedure.
What kind of support do you provide during labor?
I start supporting you from the very first signs of labor.
At the beginning, this usually happens online through WhatsApp, phone calls, texting, or whatever feels easiest for you. I stay in touch with you, help you understand what you are feeling, and guide you with simple directions and comfort tips.
I also help you recognize when you are truly in labor and when it is the right time to go to the hospital, so you feel more confident in that decision.
I will meet you at your place or once you are ready to go, I will meet you at the hospital.
During labor, I am continuously by your side, helping you with breathing, positioning, comfort techniques, and understanding what is happening as things progress. I also help you stay calm and support your decisions based on what is happening in the moment.
And this does not depend on how long your labor takes.
Whether your labor is 4 hours or 30 hours, I stay with you the entire time. I do not leave in the middle of your process.
I remain with you until your baby is born and you are both settled, making sure you feel safe, supported and that everything is going well with you and your baby.
My presence is calm and steady, so you feel grounded and supported through each stage of your birth.
Do you support only vaginal births?
No.
Many of the women I support hope for a vaginal birth, and I help them prepare for that with intention.
At the same time, I respect that birth can take different paths. If a cesarean becomes necessary, I continue supporting you so you feel informed, calm, and emotionally supported.
Your support does not change based on how your baby is born.
Can you support me if I end up having a cesarean?
Yes, absolutely.
Even if you are hoping for a vaginal birth, sometimes plans change. And in those moments, having support becomes even more important.
If we know ahead of time that your birth will be a cesarean, you have options. You can still have my support on the day of your birth, or if you prefer, we can adjust the package and remove the labor portion.
If you go into labor and things do not progress as expected, I stay with you through that process and continue supporting you as decisions are made.
When it is time for the cesarean, most hospitals only allow one person in the operating room. Many moms choose their partner to be with them, and that is completely okay.
In that case, I stay nearby and wait for you to come back to your room with your baby.
As soon as you return, I continue supporting you, making sure you feel settled, comfortable, and that everything is going well with both of you before I leave.
No matter how your birth unfolds, you are supported. And you always have a choice in how that support looks for you.
Can you still help if I get an epidural?
Yes, 100%.
A doula is not just for a natural birth.
Even with an epidural, you still need support. I help you with positioning, comfort, and understanding whatâs happening as labor progresses.
And emotionally, Iâm still there with you the entire time.
Support doesnât stop because you chose pain relief.
Do you work well with doctors and hospital teams?
Yes, always.
I respect the medical team, and I work alongside them, not against them.
My role is to support you, help you understand whatâs happening, and make sure you feel comfortable asking questions and making decisions based in evidences.
Itâs about collaboration, so you feel safe and supported.
Doula Support
Do you support home births?
I'm very flexible.
I attend homebirths, birth centers and hospital births.
Why should I have a doula?
Because birth is not just physical. It is emotional, mental, and often unpredictable.
Having a doula means you are not trying to figure everything out in the moment. You have someone with you who helps you stay calm, understand what is happening, and feel supported from beginning to end.
It is not about whether you can do it on your own.
It is about how you want to feel while you are doing it.
What makes Push It Baby Doula different?
The way I support you goes beyond the birth itself.
I start working with you during pregnancy so you feel prepared and confident before labor even begins. I help you understand your options, your body, and also how to navigate the hospital system here in the United States.
I also offer bilingual support in English and Portuguese, so you can express yourself clearly and feel truly understood.
And because many of the families I support are far from home, I focus on creating a sense of connection, not support just during labor.
Whatâs the difference between a doula and a midwife?
Great question, because they have very different roles.
A midwife is a trained professional responsible for your medical care. She monitors you and your baby, and helps to make clinical decisions.
I donât do anything medical.
I stay with you the whole time, helping you stay calm, understand whatâs happening, and feel supported through each moment.
She focus on the medical side. I focus on you.
Will you replace my partner or take away their role?
No, not at all. I actually help your partner feel more confident.
Most partners really want to support you, but in the moment, theyâre not always sure what to do. Thatâs where I come in.
I guide them. I show simple ways they can help you physically and emotionally. And I support them too.
So instead of replacing your partner, I help them be more present and involved. It becomes a team!
What if I feel scared or unsure about giving birth?
That is more common than you think.
You do not need to feel ready right now.
Part of my role is to help you understand what is happening, prepare step by step, and feel calmer and more confident as your birth approaches.
You are not expected to have everything figured out. We built that together.
Blessingway
What is a Blessingway, and how is it different from a traditional baby shower?
A Blessingway is an intimate gathering created to emotionally support, celebrate, and honor the mother as she prepares for birth and motherhood.
Unlike a traditional baby shower, the focus is not on gifts or games. The experience is centered on connection, emotional support, meaningful rituals, and creating a calm and loving space for the mother to feel truly cared for during this important transition.
It is a moment to slow down, feel supported, and be surrounded by intentional love and encouragement.
Can the ceremony be personalized to fit my personality and preferences?
Yes, completely.
Every Blessingway is created with intention around the motherâs personality, comfort level, and desires for the experience.
Some mothers want something minimal and intimate with only a few people. Others prefer a more emotional and expressive gathering with rituals, music, and active guest participation.
The goal is not to follow a strict format. It is to create an experience that feels authentic, safe, and meaningful for you.
Who usually attends a Blessingway?
Most Blessingways are smaller and more intimate than traditional baby showers.
Many mothers invite close friends, family members, or women who make them feel safe and supported. Some ceremonies also include partners or children, depending on the motherâs preferences.
There are no strict rules. The most important thing is creating a space where you feel emotionally comfortable and supported.
Can I have a Blessingway even if you are not my doula?
Yes.
The Blessingway can be booked as a separate experience, even if I am not supporting your birth as your doula.
Some mothers choose only the ceremony, while others include it as part of their full doula support experience.
Where can the Blessingway happen?
The ceremony can happen in your home or in another location that feels comfortable and meaningful to you.
If needed, I can also help guide you with ideas and suggestions for creating the right atmosphere for the experience.
How far in advance should I book?
The sooner, the better.
Because I offer personalized support and work closely with each family, availability can become limited depending on the season and schedule.
Booking earlier also gives us more time to thoughtfully plan the experience together.
What usually happens during a Blessingway?
Each ceremony is personalized, but the experience often includes moments of connection, reflection, and support shared with the closest people to you.
Depending on your preferences, the gathering may include:
-Guided connection moments
-Letters, blessings, or words of encouragement from guests
-Breathing or grounding moments
-Candles, flowers, natural elements, or symbolic rituals
-A handmade flower crown for the mother
-Music, meaningful conversations, and intentional activities.
The atmosphere is calm, emotional, intimate, and centered around helping the mother feel nurtured and supported.
Does the Blessingway need to be religious or spiritual?
Not at all. The experience can be spiritual, symbolic, emotional, or simply centered on connection and support, depending entirely on what feels meaningful to you. Some mothers prefer a very simple and modern gathering, while others enjoy incorporating deeper symbolic elements. Everything is adapted to your comfort, beliefs, and vision for the experience.
Investment & Coverage
Do you offer payment plans or other ways to make doula support more accessible?
Yes. I understand that doula support is an important investment, and I want to help families find a way that feels possible and comfortable for them.
Depending on your situation, we can talk about flexible payment options and ways to plan your investment over time.
Some families also choose to create a Doula Registry, where friends and family can contribute toward their birth support instead of traditional baby gifts. This can be a very meaningful way to receive support during pregnancy and birth while allowing loved ones to be part of your journey.
If you would like to explore this option, you can apply here:

What is included in your doula package?
I offer support that starts during pregnancy and continues through your birth and the first moments after your baby arrives.
During pregnancy, we have preparation sessions where I help you understand your body, your options, and how to feel more confident going into labor.
You also have access to me while you are approaching your due date, so you can reach out with questions or when labor begins.
During labor, I stay with you continuously, supporting you physically and emotionally the entire time.
After your baby is born, I will remain with you until you and your baby are settled, and we will also have a follow-up to talk through your experience.
The full details of what is included, such as the number of sessions and specific services, we go over together so you can choose what feels right for you
Can I get reimbursed by my insurance for doula services?
Sometimes, yes.
While most insurance plans do not directly cover doula care, some families are able to receive partial reimbursement by submitting their receipts as out-of-network services. You may also be able to use your HSA or FSA funds.
I provide a detailed invoice that you can submit to your insurance company if you choose to explore reimbursement.
In some cases, having a letter written by your OB-GYN or midwife explaining why doula support is beneficial can help increase your chances of receiving some coverage. This may include situations such as anxiety, a high-risk pregnancy, or the need for continuous support during labor.
Because coverage varies widely, I recommend contacting your insurance provider in advance to understand your specific benefits. Iâm also happy to guide you on what to ask.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for doula services?
In many cases, yes.
Most families pay for doula services directly and then request reimbursement through their HSA or FSA. Some clients are also able to pay using their HSA/FSA card.
I provide a detailed receipt that you can submit to your provider. In some cases, your plan may also ask for a Letter of Medical Necessity.
Having a letter written by your OB-GYN or midwife explaining why doula support is beneficial can increase your chances of getting some coverage. This may include situations such as anxiety, a high-risk pregnancy, or the need for continuous support during labor.
Because each plan is different, I recommend checking your benefits in advance. Iâm also happy to guide you on what to ask.
Practical Questions
What happens if you canât make it when I go into labor?
That is a very valid question.
I work independently and take a limited number of clients so I can be fully available and on call for each family. My commitment is to be there for you when you need me.
If I am not able to attend your birth due to a rare and unexpected situation, such as a health emergency or something truly out of my control, I will take full responsibility for that.
In that case, you will be reimbursed for the portion of the service I could not provide.
My goal is always to be present, and I organize my schedule very carefully to avoid any conflicts.
I am also in the process of building a trusted backup network, so in the future you will have even more reassurance and continuity of care.
Are doulas always allowed in the hospital?
Yes.
The hospitals encourage the presence of a doula and I work respectfully alongside obstetrics staff.
Most of them recognize a doula as part of the support team, although some still consider it as a visitor.
Hospital policies can vary, so we always review what applies to your specific hospital ahead of time.
My role is to support you while respecting the environment and the obstetrics team caring for you.
Do you need to be certified to be a doula?
In North Carolina, certification is not required.
But I chose to train through DONA International and continue learning because I believe this work carries a lot of responsibility.
Youâre trusting someone to be with you in a very important moment, and I take that seriously.
What areas of North Carolina do you offer your doula support?
I support families in Raleigh and the surrounding Triangle area, including Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, and nearby cities.
If youâre not sure about your location, just reach out, and we can talk.
Birth Arts
How do your birth keepsakes and photography work?
I offer a few meaningful ways to help you preserve your birth story.
During labor, when appropriate, I can take simple and discreet photos of special moments. These are not staged photos, but real moments that often pass quickly and might be forgotten with time.
After your baby is born, I can also create a placenta print and an umbilical cord keepsake. These are prepared with care and respect, transforming something very symbolic into a lasting memory.
If I am your doula, I will take care of collecting everything right after the birth and bring home with me.
If I am not part of your birth as a doula, you can still request this service. I can arrange to pick up the placenta or umbilical cord, depending on your location, for an additional fee based on distance.
This is a separate service that you can choose on its own or include as part of your experience.
What is a placenta print?
It is a symbolic and artistic way to capture the birth of your baby.
After birth, the placenta is carefully prepared and used to create an imprint on paper. The result often resembles the shape of a tree, which is why it is also known as the âtree of life.â
Each print is unique and represents this special moment in a meaningful and delicate way.
You can pick the color you want and I will do my best to make the art to look the way you imagined.
What is an umbilical cord keepsake?
It is a way to preserve the umbilical cord in a symbolic form.
After birth, the cord is treated and shaped into a special form, often a heart or another simple design, creating a unique memory from that moment.
It is a delicate keepsake, prepared with care and respect, that many families choose to keep.
I can color it or keep it natural.
Can I request this service without hiring you as my doula?
Yes, you can.
Even if I am not supporting you as your doula during birth, you can still request this service separately.
I can arrange to pick up the placenta or umbilical cord, depending on your location, with an additional fee based on distance.
This way, you can still have this meaningful memory from your babyâs birth, even without the full doula support.
Preparing for Birth
What is the perinatal education you offer, and how does it help me prepare for labor?
It is a personalized preparation for your birth.
During our sessions, I help you understand your body and how it works during labor, what to expect in each stage, and what your options are in the hospital setting.
We also go over comfort techniques, positions, and ways to cope with contractions, so you feel more confident when the moment comes.
The goal is not to make everything perfect.
It is to help you feel prepared, informed, and able to make decisions with calmer and clarity during your birth to have the best experience possible in that moment.
Do you help me create a birth plan?
Yes.
I help you build a birth plan that reflects your preferences, your values, and what matters most to you.
More than just a document, it is a way for you to understand your options and feel more confident in your decisions.
Why is bilingual support important?
Because birth is a moment where you need to feel fully understood.
When you can speak in your own language, express your fears, and ask questions without hesitation, everything feels calmer.
I support you in both English and Portuguese so you can communicate clearly and feel more confident throughout your experience.
And if you have a family member visiting from your country, I can also translate and explain everything that is happening to them.
Do you help with navigating the hospital system?
Yes.
Many families feel unsure about how the system works here in the United States. I help you understand your options, your rights, and what to expect in the hospital environment.
This helps you feel more prepared and more confident in your decisions.
I can also help you pick which hospital in the area fits best for your family according to your birth wishes.
Postpartum
Do you offer support beyond the birth?
Yes, and this is something many families really value.
I offer meaningful ways to help you remember your birth, like placenta prints and simple documentation of special moments.
I also connect the mothers I support through a WhatsApp group and small gatherings, so you can share experiences, ask questions, and feel supported by other women who are going through the same phase.
For many families, especially those living far from home, this sense of community makes a big difference even after the baby arrives.
Do you offer support after the baby is born?
Yes.
After your baby is born, I stay with you until you feel settled and supported in those first moments.
We also have a follow-up where you can talk about your experience, process your birth, and ask any questions that may come up after.
And through the community I create, you also stay connected with other mothers during this phase.
It is always good to talk to someone that is on the "same boat" as you.
Booking & Getting Started
When should I book you as my doula?
As early as you feel ready.
I work one-on-one and provide continuous support. So I take a limited number of births each month. This allows me to be fully present for each family without risking schedule conflicts.
Birth does not follow an exact date, so I carefully space my availability to make sure I can truly be there for you when the time comes.
If you feel connected to my approach, it is best to reach out early in your pregnancy to secure your spot.
This way, we can plan everything with calm, and you can move forward knowing your support is already in place.
What happens after I contact you?
After you reach out, we schedule a conversation so I can understand your expectations, your questions, and how you are feeling about your birth.
This is not a sales call. It is a space for you to talk, ask anything, and see if you feel comfortable with me.
I will also explain how I work, what support looks like, and what options are available for you.
From there, you can take your time to decide if this feels right for you.
What if Iâm not sure if we are the right fit?
That is completely okay.
Choosing a doula is something very personal, and it is important that you feel comfortable and safe.
Our first conversation is exactly for that. There is no pressure to decide right away.
You can take your time, reflect, and feel what is right for you.
